Arne Vodder

1947-53

After approximately half a year’s employment at Hindsgaul, the urge for independent expression quickly drove Vodder into working for himself. Soon Vodder and Borg decided to start for themselves as interior designers.

For a start, they proactively contacted businesses where they saw an opportunity to create exciting new furnishings.

It was quite hard work in the beginning, but eventually they succeeded in getting many customers and Vodder became at the time associated with the department store Havemanns on Vesterbrogade, Copenhagen, fore which he worked with primarily interior design for more than 25 years.

Vodders Early Career

Beside interior design, Vodder also had the opportunity to interact with the consumers of the department store, Havemanns Magasin, where he made seminars on how to use furniture and other parameters in interior design. Later on, he also got the opportunity to get consumer feedback on his early furniture designs which were also sold in the department store.

Vodder establishes his  first design studio

During this period, Vodder developed several elegant designs produced by cabinetmakers Winther, Alvin Olsson, Carl Brørup and Ivan Schlechter and later Bovirke and Vamo. In the late 1940’s Vodder and his friend and colleague Anton Borg established their first common design studio at Landmærket 3 in Copenhagen.

In the following years, both architects were active with interior design, remodeling and, for Vodder, also furniture designs.

However, the space in the studio quickly became too limited and the design studio was soon moved to Sct. Pederstræde also in Copenhagen.

Vodder develops his designs

In the following years, Vodder developed his designs more and more and adapted to the trends of the time.

In this period Vodder expanded the collaboration with cabinetmakers and manufacturers such as, France and Daverkosen (which later became France & son) and Poul Dinesen.

At that time, it was still at Snedkerlauget’s yearly exhibitions that all the all the new exciting designs in Denmark were presented.
